boolean column

How do you add a boolean column or the best alternative to a SQL Express
database?John wrote:
> How do you add a boolean column or the best alternative to a SQL Express

There is no boolean column datatype. Instead you could try:
ALTER TABLE tbl
ADD bool CHAR(1) NOT NULL
CONSTRAINT df_tbl_bool DEFAULT 'N'
CONSTRAINT ck_tbl_bool CHECK (bool IN ('Y','N'));
or:
ALTER TABLE tbl
ADD bool BIT NOT NULL
CONSTRAINT df_tbl_bool DEFAULT 0;
The BIT type has the potential advantage that client code can easily
convert it to a boolean type. BIT will also save you a certain amount
of storage if you have more than one such column in a table.
CHAR has the potential to allow a clearer and more meaningful choice of
code and you can easily add further codes in future if you want to.
CHAR also doesn't suffer from the annoying inconsistencies that bug the
BIT type: BIT is a numeric type but not all numeric operations are
permitted.

Whenever possible please post enough code to reproduce your problem.
Including CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements usually helps.
State what version of SQL Server you are using and specify the content
of any error messages.

You can use bit datatype. In SQL Server 2005 it also accepts true or
false words in TSQL , which is not supported in SQL Server 2000.

It is worth noticing that these words are passed as strings, not keywords.

Boolean ?

Hello,
Is there a way to define a boolean with SQL Server 2005 (Express)
Thanks,Use a bit datatype. Values = 0 or 1

Most people use a BIT (0 or 1).
There are arguments for and against using CHAR(1) values with a check
constraint ('Y', 'N'), ('T', 'F').
You're better off with either of those than a (var)char(5) allowing 'TRUE'
and 'FALSE' as strings.
Oh, and you will never be able to shorthand WHERE column = 1 for WHERE
column, or WHERE column = 0 for WHERE NOT column. Even though the datatype
you choose (along with the cnstraints if necessary) may seem like a valid
boolean expression to you, SQL Server does not consider them as such.

Btw, did you see the new error message 2005 gives you when you try to say something like "WHERE
col"? Pretty informative...

Hehe, apparently there is some context that expects boolean type in SQL

WHERE EXISTS

Books Online reply to Barry Andrew

I have registered to use SQL server 2005 Express Edition. I want to download relevant documentation for books online. The guidance for this is to download the 'SqlServer2k5_BOL_Jul2006.msi' software.

When I initiate this download:-

(1) I get a message from my ISP (I.e AOL) saying the publisher coud not be verified, and asking if I wanted to run this software.
(2) when I press 'run' software is downloaded to a tmp file, and I get the option to install.
(3) On clicking the install button, a Windiws Installer message appears - this states that ' the installation package cannot be opened and suggests contacting the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer Package.

How can I access the BOL software download (s)?

Hi,

Please try a fresh download from here; http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2005/downloads/books.mspx

Try again and let us know how you get on.

You also may want to save the file to your machine and run from there (as opposed to running from the web location), and then delete the original file if you don't want it around.

Hi Barry

Your suggestion of downloading to another machine has worked. I copied the resulting download to my machine and ran it from there. This worked! I have now got the books online that I wanted.
I have no idea why, but the installation worked- the download was some 120 megabytes, compared with the 84 or so megabytes of the file downloaded directly to my machine!

Books on line for SQL Server Express

It seems that SQL Server Express 2005 (RTM) does not include books on line. I decided to install them from SQL Server Enterprise CD that we have license for. However, the setup informs me that this upgrade is not supported. How can we install the SQL Server books on line with SQL Server Express?
Thanks in advance.

You're correct, Express does not include Books Online. The RTM version of Books Online will be available for download on Monday November 7th. This download will include both the SQL Express Books Online and the full-version of Books Online.

However, I'm sort of surprised that you couldn't install just the BOL from your Enterprise CD. Did you run Setup from under the Tools folder or under the Server folder? I would think that the Tools setup would work. At least I was able to install BOL that way on a machine that did not have any version of SQL Server 2005 installed.

Book recommendation

I have begun to try to break out of using Access db's (97!) and have been trying out SQL Server Express 2005 along with the SQL Management Studio Express. I am a little confused with it as I am trying to use the interface inside of VB.NET 2005 as well as the management studio and sometimes I can connect from one without the other.

Anyway this points to the fact that I have a lot to learn and I was looking for a recommendation for a book that could be a tutorial for using VB.NET 2005 with SQL Server Express. I really need something that starts from square one but hopefully builds fast. Right now it appears I need to understand connection strings (when do I put ".\sqlexpress" and when do I use the server name followed by the instance for example?).

I have tried some of the books online for example and ran into a dead end with the simple tutorial (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms165732.aspx) when the headers didn't sort, I couldn't select any other pages and the edit button didn't work. I don't have a clue what happened as I followed the instructions.

Anyway if someone could recommend something that teaches using SQL Server Express while building an application with VB2005 that would be perfect.

Dana

There are a TON of books that would help you (as I have read about .5 of them and believe or not I collect them...hey i love what I do :)). Anyway as a Wrox author I recommend the following two titles:

http://www.wrox.com/WileyCDA/WroxTitle/productCd-0764595733.html

http://www.wrox.com/WileyCDA/WroxTitle/productCd-0764589237.html

and if you want to learn SQL Server 2005's CLR integration one day then this one :)

http://www.wrox.com/WileyCDA/WroxTitle/productCd-0470054034.html

|||Derek,

Just wanted to follow up on your recommendation and say thank you. I purchased the WROX SQL Server Express Starter Kit you recommended as well as a book called Beginning SQL Server Express by Rick Dobson (mainly because Amazon gave me a package deal.. brilliant marketing move!) and although I am only beginning to read them they are exactly what I wanted .. something that starts from the very beginning and moves along fairly quickly.

My problem has been that I have lived Access97 until this so I really needed to start with a very basic understanding of the daunting world of the "server databases" and the associated management tools, leaving my cocoon of saved queries and linked tables behind and learning connection strings and stored procedures instead. This should get me on track so thank you for taking the time to reply.

blob data type in SQL Express

Hi all,

I am trying to store binary datafiles into a SQl Express table. However I can not find the BLOB data type when I am designing the table. Are we limited to using that kind of data type in the Express edition? Thanks.

Ke

hi Ke,

if you are searching for a BLOB datatype, you'll miss it..

SQLExpress does support blobs in different formats, binary, varbinary, image and text/ntext as long as the new datatypes as varchar(MAX), nvarchar(MAX), varbinary(MAX), XML

use tempdb;

GO

CREATE TABLE dbo.testBlob (

Id int NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY,

b varchar(max),

i image,

b2 varbinary (50)

);

GO

DROP TABLE dbo.testBlob ;

I've just run SQL Server Management Studio Express, the official graphical client tool for SQLExpress, available for free download at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=C243A5AE-4BD1-4E3D-94B8-5A0F62BF7796&displaylang=en, and the relative datatypes are listed in the datatypes combobox when editing tables...

please have a look at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms187752.aspx for all supported data types..

Blank warning when I launch SQL Express mgt.

I have rebuilt this laptop (XPpro) and installed the SQL Express, now when we
launch the sql server management studio express we get a blank warning popup.
Anyone have any ideas why we are getting this and how to remove it?
I have sql loaded on other laptops and this is the first one that this has
showed up on. When you click on OK you can connect to your dBase just fine.
Thanks.

I was having the same problem. To fix it, I did a complete uninstall of all sql components via add/remove. Then manually removed the C:\Program Files\Micorsoft SQL Server folder.
Then I removed the Network 2.0 framework then, after restarting I reinstalled everything and the blank dialog is gone. You might try just reinstalling the Network 2.0 Framework first. I think MSMXL 6.0 gets removed automatically, but that has to go also.
In any case, I had tried numerous other fixes and this is the only thing that worked.

and this is the page code loading the report
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
DataSet dsCliente = new DataSet();
dsCliente.DataSetName = "DsCliente";
MySqlConnection mycnn = new
MySqlConnection(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["reminder_local"].ToString());
MySqlCommand cmd = new MySqlCommand();
MySqlDataAdapter DA = new MySqlDataAdapter();
cmd.Connection = mycnn;
cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;
cmd.Parameters.Add(new MySqlParameter("P_ID", 1));
cmd.Parameters.Add(new MySqlParameter("P_AncheAnnullati",
"True"));
cmd.CommandText = "spSelectClienteByID";
DA.SelectCommand = cmd;
DA.Fill(dsCliente);
dsCliente.Tables[0].TableName = "tbCliente";
rwScheda.ProcessingMode = Microsoft.Reporting.WebForms.ProcessingMode.Local;
rwScheda.LocalReport.ReportPath = MapPath("SchedeClienti.rdlc");
ReportDataSource rptDS = new ReportDataSource();
rptDS.Name = "DSCliente";
rptDS.Value = dsCliente.Tables[0];
rwScheda.LocalReport.DataSources.Add(rptDS);
rwScheda.DataBind();
//rwScheda.LocalReport.Refresh();
}
I've already seen that in the table there is one record.
Why I don't see anything'I answer myself
I put the property AsyncRendering="false" on the reportviewer object
in the aspx page
and now works fine.

Blank password from command line installation

Hi, I need blank password for user "sa" when I instaling SQL 2005 Express from command line. SAPWD=<strong password> --> SAPWD=<blank password> ?

If you install SQL Express to use Windows Authentication (the deafult) you don't need to supply an SAPWD. (In fact the SA account is disabled in this case for SQL Express.) If you are installing using SQL Authentication you need to supply a strong password, I don't know of a way around this.

I can't think of any reason that I would ever let the SA user have a blank password. You might as well just send hackers a key to you house, the dates of your next vacation and a note telling them to have a good time while you're away. Security is provided for very good reasons, you should not try to defeat it in this way.

|||I agree you should never use a blank password, from memory you needed to supply a password for the sa account from sql 2000 sp3 onwards.
