Books, Courses and Training about Reporting Service for dummies

Hi,

We have currently done one data ware house project with MS SQL server, reporting server, analysis server and integration server and the users are very happy with it (especially the speed).

The reports have been developed by a developer. I have years of experience in Visual studio, SQL, reports so I could do it very quickly. The users want to make their own reports so they need training. If I look at the requirements for most books and courses they are pretty hard. You must have some experience in SQL server. Or books are focussed on RS2000. Or the books could elapse the whole spectrum of SQL, ETL, cubes and reports or they go in to securing reports.

I think that is not the information that the users want to know. It should start with what is a cube, what are dimensions and what are facts. Then explain something in how do I get the information in excel. And then make reports in the visual studio environment (not the builder on the report server, but the report designer that comes with the client tools in visual studio). Keep in mind that they are not developers nor database administrators.

Any suggestions,

Constantijn Enders

Can u help to to solve my problem . Please excuse me for asking my doubt to u against ur queries. Becuase many time this question arised in the forum no one answer to me to find out the solution for my problem. So please help

I am using report builder thru LocalHost\Report . I want a drill through report by using Report Builder and cube . I created the report but unfortunatly I cannot create a drill through report using parameters .How can I pass parameter in report1 to jump into report2 .

When I running the report after giving drill through properties in report the following error will occure.

'The 'DrillthroughSourceQuery' parameter is missing a value

How can I create a report using parameter for drill down in report builder

I am expecting one answer from u expertise

Hi Devraj
Do you already have experience with SQL Server 2000? If so, then this
message I just sent to someone else will also apply to you.

Hi Jeremy,
I've recently picked up Pro SQL Server 2005 by Thomas Rizzo and a bunch
of others. I've chosen it because it's focus is almost exclusively on
the changes between 2000 and 2005. I didn't want to clutter my bookshelf
with yet another book explaining SELECT and WHERE but I did want to read
about the new features - and this book provided exactly what I wanted. I
must admit that the chapters on XML didn't quite appeal to me, but all
the chhapters before that (on installation, management, T-SQL
enhancements, and .Net integration) were great. I have yet to read the
remaining chapters (on Reporting Services, Analysis Services, security,
Service Broker, automation and monitoring, Integration Services,
Mirroring, and Notification Services).
Another great resource are Microsoft's E-Learning upgrade courses 2936
up to 2944. These all focus on changes between 2000 and 2005. And the
best part is: until November 1, 2006, they are free!

Book about Data Mining in Insurance Industry

Hi, all experts here,

Thank you very much for your kind attention.

I am currently working on my data mining project with the data from insurance industry. I am looking for more in-depth book or resource about the data mining application in insurance industry.

Have any experts here ever found any great resouce about that? Please shed any light on that. It is much more appreciated.

Thank you very much in advance for your help and I am looking forward to hearing from you.

With best regards,

Yours sincerely,

The best reference is probably this: Intelligent and Other Computational Techniques in Insurance (Shapiro)

There is also a very readable general intro to IT in insurance which has a chapter on BI and covers data mining to an extent: Insurance Technology Handbook: The New Partnership (Keyes)

Hi,
Can you recommend a book on SSIS.
I am particularly interested in books which demonstrate a particular project from start to finish while going through chapters.
ThanksYou might be interested in Project REAL.|||

Professional SQL Server 2005 Integration Services

My favourite is MS SQL Server 2005 Integration Services by Kirk Haselden.

Is that book based on a case study from start to finish please?

Blank Password Policy problem

Hi all,

We recently started to receive complaints about our install project not
working and giving and shitload of error messages related to SQL. We
later found out that the problem was the users we were trying to bind
to we're not created because of the domain password policy feature
implemented into SQL Server 2005.

After much dabbling around the SQL scripts that created the database
structure, we came to the conclusion that only this piece of code could
correct our problem :

CREATE LOGIN mynewuser WITH PASSWORD = '', CHECK_POLICY = OFF,
CHECK_EXPIRATION = OFF

This runs perfectly fine on SQL2005, but not on SQL2000. We have been
searching for a way to have code in SQL files executed on install that
doesn't fail to compile when run against the server and that will
bypass the password policy in case it's a SQL Server 2005...

Right now we are testing a feature available in MSI that can filter
scripts not matching a database version, but the problem with this, is
that we are missing a lot of features that InstallShield has. In short,
we need Help to fix this issue and be able to continue with
development.

In hopes to receive a a prompt anwserOh and by the way, the SQL2000 code we use is the following:

exec sp_addlogin N'mynewuser', null, @.logindb, @.loginlang

PS : @.logindb and @.loginlang are valid variables that contain correct
info for this SP to work|||crazyone wrote:

Why not just set a sensible password to start with? The same password
for each login if you like (anything must be better than a blank
password). Have you ever had a security audit?

Otherwise I think having two versions of your code may be your only
option.

Whenever possible please post enough code to reproduce your problem.
Including CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements usually helps.
State what version of SQL Server you are using and specify the content
of any error messages.

Blank Listbox output from SPROC

I have setup an Access Project using SQL Server. Our Tech rep Restored my Backup copy to a server and gave some of the users dbo permissions. When they Open a certain form with a listbox that has as the Rowsource a SPROC, no data is returned (other Forms with listboxes do work). When our Tech rep opens the same form, the listbox appears with the correct data. He thinks it's my Access project that is the problem and I on the other hand think it has something to do with the SQL Server setup side of things. Help would be appreciated.you said "my backup to a server'. Does this mean that the database was residing on another server? If that's the case, - it's a permissions issue.|||I created a backup version of my database and he restored it to his server and setup the necessary permissions. I'm sure permissions is the issue, he says it's setup correctly. I'm not sure where to look at this point as I don't know enough about the security side of things.|||on his server change to the databaase in question and type:

exec sp_change_users_login 'report'

if the output returns anything, check what user ids became orphan. You may find users that have empty listbox there.|||We tried that and the report was empty. Any idea what I should try next? Thanks

Bit of help with a small project i have

hi, im basically looking some advice here for a small project we have.
basically im looking at automating an attendance register
in short want i want to do i build a matrix of students attendance on a
course. this table of data will then be used to populate a Datagrid. Course
Duration can vary but i will only ever report on the attendance for any one
course at a time. basically i will pass in the courseID as a parameter to
return the attendance for all the students on that course
what all would i need?
tbl_Students.(StudID, Name)
tbl_Course (CourseID, CourseDesc, CourseDuration)
tbl_Attendance(ID, StudID, CourseID, WNum, Attended)
what im thinking is that i will need a record for each student for each w
the course runs
im getting a bit stuck on how i would return the records in the way i want
Student Name W1, W2 etc......
Craig G 1 0 1 1 1 1 1
Jim B 1 0 0 1 1 1 1
Sam A 0 1 1 1 1 1 1
basically i would like my output to be as above where each W is a column
in a temp_table. and the 1 & 0 simply represent whether they attended or not
This may not be the best way to do it, its only the early stages of the
project so i am open to an ideas on how you would go about it
Cheers for the help,
CraigCross tabulations are best done using a report writer or a client tier
programming language. To get this done as a resultset, refer to:

Hi Craig,
For the cross-tab query, check out the link Anith posted. But since
you're in the early stages of the project, allow me to post some
comments on your table design.

>what all would i need?
>tbl_Students.(StudID, Name)
Rename this table to "Students". No need to use the "tbl_" prefix; if
the name is in a FROM clause, you'll know it's a table anyway.
See if you can find a better key for students - something that can be
verified in the real world. The student's SSN would be ideal; you can
also check the school administration to find out if they have some
registration number.

>tbl_Course (CourseID, CourseDesc, CourseDuration)
The tbl_ prefix on this one should go as well. Most people prefer plural
names for tables, except for tables that hold only one row, so consider
renaming to "Courses".
Doesn't your school use mnemonic abbreviations for courses? These are
often an ideal candidate for primary keys: they are short enough, they
are easy verifiable and they are already in use and known.

>tbl_Attendance(ID, StudID, CourseID, WNum, Attended)
WNum? What will you do after december? If you start using w 1
again, you'll get duplicate data. I think you should add year as well,
or you should use a datetime column holding the first day of the w
(that way, you'll have date and year in the same column, the downside is
that you have to do some calculations to extract w number).
I don't think you need a seperate ID column in this table. Just use the
compound primary key on StudID, CourseID, WNum and Year.
Get rid of the Attended column. Only record the students that attend a
course. If there's no row for a student in a specific w, (s)he did
not attend the course.
I also think you're missing a table. It seems logical that students
enlist for some courses, probably picking a starting w. So you also
need a table
Enlistments (StudID, CourseID, StartW, StartYear)
With (StudID, CourseID) the primary key. StudID and CourseID are each a
foreign key to Students resp. Courses. And the combination (StudID,
CourseID) in Attendance will be a foreign key to Enlistments.
Best, Hugo

key. You need to do a little research on database design before you start
telling people how to screw up their design. Don't you know that SSN's can
