Bookmarks (Management Studio)

How do you save bookmarks so you can use them next time you edit the saved query file?

I asked the same quesiton with 0 responses, I am creating a feedback suggestion now for it.

Here's the answer:

Dan, I created a new project. Then I opened my .sql, added bookmarks, then added the .sql to the project. I closed and saved both the .sql and the project but, when I opened the project again, the bookmarks are gone. I'm a little new so I had our DBA come over and help me. He, too, doesn't understand why the bookmarks aren't there.

Do you have any suggestions? Any obscure tip or setting that I should know about? If not, can I assume it's a bug in SQL Server 2005? I see that someone "opened a ticket" but I wanted to ask before I assumed there was no answer.

Thanks for your help -- or anyone else with a suggestion,

Kate

There is feedback to Microsoft concerning this issue and even though it was suppose to be in this version, they said they would be considering it for the next release. If anyone else want bookmarks to persist in Management Studio, let Microsoft know in their Feedback.

Book recommendation

I have begun to try to break out of using Access db's (97!) and have been trying out SQL Server Express 2005 along with the SQL Management Studio Express. I am a little confused with it as I am trying to use the interface inside of VB.NET 2005 as well as the management studio and sometimes I can connect from one without the other.

Anyway this points to the fact that I have a lot to learn and I was looking for a recommendation for a book that could be a tutorial for using VB.NET 2005 with SQL Server Express. I really need something that starts from square one but hopefully builds fast. Right now it appears I need to understand connection strings (when do I put ".\sqlexpress" and when do I use the server name followed by the instance for example?).

I have tried some of the books online for example and ran into a dead end with the simple tutorial (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms165732.aspx) when the headers didn't sort, I couldn't select any other pages and the edit button didn't work. I don't have a clue what happened as I followed the instructions.

Anyway if someone could recommend something that teaches using SQL Server Express while building an application with VB2005 that would be perfect.

Dana

There are a TON of books that would help you (as I have read about .5 of them and believe or not I collect them...hey i love what I do :)). Anyway as a Wrox author I recommend the following two titles:

http://www.wrox.com/WileyCDA/WroxTitle/productCd-0764595733.html

http://www.wrox.com/WileyCDA/WroxTitle/productCd-0764589237.html

and if you want to learn SQL Server 2005's CLR integration one day then this one :)

http://www.wrox.com/WileyCDA/WroxTitle/productCd-0470054034.html

|||Derek,

Just wanted to follow up on your recommendation and say thank you. I purchased the WROX SQL Server Express Starter Kit you recommended as well as a book called Beginning SQL Server Express by Rick Dobson (mainly because Amazon gave me a package deal.. brilliant marketing move!) and although I am only beginning to read them they are exactly what I wanted .. something that starts from the very beginning and moves along fairly quickly.

My problem has been that I have lived Access97 until this so I really needed to start with a very basic understanding of the daunting world of the "server databases" and the associated management tools, leaving my cocoon of saved queries and linked tables behind and learning connection strings and stored procedures instead. This should get me on track so thank you for taking the time to reply.

Body BackgroundImage not displayed in browser

I have been trying to set up reports with a background image. The background displays correctly on the preview tab in Visual Studio, but is not visible when deployed to the report server and rendered in Internet Explorer.

However, if the report is printed, or exported to PDF or Excel, the background displays correctly.

It does not seem to make any difference if the image is external or embedded. Also, the problem only seems to affect the Body properties; a background image attached to a table, for example, seems to display correctly.

Has anybody else seen this behavior? I have not done extensive testing, but every report that I have tried seems to have the same problem. Is there a setting someplace that I am missing, or is this perhaps a bug in IE?

This sounds like a known issue in RS 2005 SP1 where the background images does not show up when rendering with the ReportViewer control. This was addressed in a Hotfix and will also be fixed in Visual Studio 2005 SP1.

I am running RS 2005 with SP2. When I render a RS report to Internet Explorer the background image still is not displaying, though the image does print. Exactly as described in the origional message. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Blank warning when I launch SQL Express mgt.

I have rebuilt this laptop (XPpro) and installed the SQL Express, now when we
launch the sql server management studio express we get a blank warning popup.
Anyone have any ideas why we are getting this and how to remove it?
I have sql loaded on other laptops and this is the first one that this has
showed up on. When you click on OK you can connect to your dBase just fine.
Thanks.

I was having the same problem. To fix it, I did a complete uninstall of all sql components via add/remove. Then manually removed the C:\Program Files\Micorsoft SQL Server folder.
Then I removed the Network 2.0 framework then, after restarting I reinstalled everything and the blank dialog is gone. You might try just reinstalling the Network 2.0 Framework first. I think MSMXL 6.0 gets removed automatically, but that has to go also.
In any case, I had tried numerous other fixes and this is the only thing that worked.

I've already seen that in the table there is one record.
Why I don't see anything'I answer myself
I put the property AsyncRendering="false" on the reportviewer object
in the aspx page
and now works fine.

Blank Error Messagebox Displayed at startup

When I start SQL Server Management Studio an error message box with no text is displayed with the Exclamation ICON. Everything seems to be working after clicking OK though. Anyone else experienced this. Also... Why is it that I can't repair the installation from Add and Uninstall? Do I have to uninstall it to repair it?

The SQL 2005 is the Developer Addition with a new install...I haven't seen the empty error message box problem. Does it still do that when you start Management Studio, or was it a one-time thing?

You should be able to repair your installation by clicking on the "Change" button rather than "Uninstall" and then walking through the setup wizard.|||Steven,

Actually when I select change from the Add/Remove menu the install starts, but after it checks prerequisets it tells me it's already installed and then tells me there is no maintenance mode and suggests that I do it from Add/Remove Programs ;o).

I don't know why, but beginning Friday the dialog box is gone (go figure). I think the system must be saying, "Wait until Otis logs on and if it's the third Thursday of the month and the moon is not full, throw up that blank message box before you open the Management Studio." Big Smile|||

You are going to Add/Remove Programs and clicking the Change button there, right? That should get you into maintenance mode for SQL Setup.

|||Yes, that's where I'm going and it does say that it's going into maintenance mode, but after checking the previous install it says there is no maintenance mode for the product.

I'll check it again tomorrow and let you know exactly what I see, rather than what I recall ;-) It's late here in Tejas.|||I've just started receiving the same blank error message. The only thing I recall doing since it ran without the error message is running windows updates with the 2 most recent suggested updates for XP + the 1.1 .NET framework. I also installed an application which uses the 1.1 framework. I had all of the same components (minus the two most recent suggested updates) running on the same machine while SQL 2005 was still in beta and never ran into this problem.<br><br>
I'm working on the machine from remote right now so I am not going to bother messing with it while it appears to still be working.|||

Does repairing .NET Framework 2.0 fix this problem?

You can do that by going to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and clicking on the Change/Remove button for Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0. When the setup dialog appears, select Repair and click Next.

It's a bit of an ongoing saga in that I repair VS 2005, it breaks the other app - I run the other app, it breaks VS 2005. It also appears to have an effect on the documentation browser - when it's VS 2005's turn to be broken many of the tables in the help render text improperly - it will show up half outside of the cells in any table and is mostly unreadable.

The other app is a CRM tool that I am not awfully fond of though. In all honesty, I'm kind of glad to have a reason to uninstall it. :)

...Kevin|||I'm getting the same blank error message box after installing the 1.1 .net framework.|||well my error box just turned from a yeild sign !, to a Stop sign X, now for the problem. if i press either yes or no it reboots to the login page|||I am also getting this problem. I'm not sure but it may have started after installing the .NET Framework 1.1. I don't do anything with Crystal Reports.|||I too am getting the blank dialog, with an exclamation, although it seems to be benign and everything else is working fine. No Crystal Reports here...|||

Does repairing .NET Framework 2.0 fix this problem?

You can do that by going to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and clicking on the Change/Remove button for Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0. When the setup dialog appears, select Repair and click Next.

Thanks,
Steve

I don't know why, but my installation just stopped didplaying the blank messagebox a couple of days after the anomally presented itself (see my post above).

I would be interested in knowing if yours goes away too.|||Oddly enough, it has!
I did what work I had to do and when I was finished I was going to try the suggested maintenance from Add/Remove Programs, but it no longer shows up. I did get a screenshot for a friend's 'collection' though.. so it wasn't a total loss. ;)|||
