Blocking SQL server by machine name?
I've Windows 2000 server with SQL 2000 server running.
I have a SQL user (let's call miniSa) which is mostly "sa" on one SQL box.
And that account is used to all over the places (VB apps,Web app, DTS
connection). Now I know that a person shouldn't be access to the SQL box bu
t
he does using the account. Only way I can track down him is from SQL profil
e
with his machine name.
Is there a way that I can block the SQL box only from a specific machine nam
e?
Thank you in advance.

It's kind of ugly, but you could do TCP/IP filtering on the server level and
block the IP address of the computer that your "SQL user" uses. A better way
would be a review of the security implementation, eliminate this commonly
used account and implement Windows Authentication with nt group membership.
Steve|||Thanks for the reply Steve.
Using TCP/IP Filtering is not an option because of DHCP server. I may use
MAC address but that way that user may not use all the apps in the server.
I
don't want that happen either. I want just SQL server databases access
denied from the PC.
I will work on the whole problem but I need some time and ofcourse runing
several projects, support developers, and admin issues......tough.
Any other suggestions?

Yes, I still recommend my previous suggestion, some times there are no
+easy+ solutions. Sorry.

Blank Error Messagebox Displayed at startup
The SQL 2005 is the Developer Addition with a new install...I haven't seen the empty error message box problem. Does it still do that when you start Management Studio, or was it a one-time thing?
You should be able to repair your installation by clicking on the "Change" button rather than "Uninstall" and then walking through the setup wizard.|||Steven,
Actually when I select change from the Add/Remove menu the install starts, but after it checks prerequisets it tells me it's already installed and then tells me there is no maintenance mode and suggests that I do it from Add/Remove Programs ;o).
I don't know why, but beginning Friday the dialog box is gone (go figure). I think the system must be saying, "Wait until Otis logs on and if it's the third Thursday of the month and the moon is not full, throw up that blank message box before you open the Management Studio."
|||
You are going to Add/Remove Programs and clicking the Change button there, right? That should get you into maintenance mode for SQL Setup.
|||Yes, that's where I'm going and it does say that it's going into maintenance mode, but after checking the previous install it says there is no maintenance mode for the product.I'll check it again tomorrow and let you know exactly what I see, rather than what I recall ;-) It's late here in Tejas.|||I've just started receiving the same blank error message. The only thing I recall doing since it ran without the error message is running windows updates with the 2 most recent suggested updates for XP + the 1.1 .NET framework. I also installed an application which uses the 1.1 framework. I had all of the same components (minus the two most recent suggested updates) running on the same machine while SQL 2005 was still in beta and never ran into this problem.<br><br>
I'm working on the machine from remote right now so I am not going to bother messing with it while it appears to still be working.|||

I would be interested in knowing if yours goes away too.|||Oddly enough, it has!
I did what work I had to do and when I was finished I was going to try the suggested maintenance from Add/Remove Programs, but it no longer shows up. I did get a screenshot for a friend's 'collection' though.. so it wasn't a total loss. ;)|||

|||I have since run into this problem again. It seems to be related to Crystal Reports. I run an application that appears to use an older version of some Crystal Reports dll than VS 2005 provides. Does repairing .NET Framework 2.0 fix this problem?
You can do that by going to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and clicking on the Change/Remove button for Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0. When the setup dialog appears, select Repair and click Next.

I had all of the same components (minus the two most recent suggested updates) running on the same machine while SQL 2005 was still in beta and never ran into this problem.<br><br>
I'm working on the machine from remote right now so I am not going to bother messing with it while it appears to still be working.|||

Blank Dialog Box When Starting SQL
Hi, you can take a look at this post![]()

bizarre performance issue
CPU and RAM available. There is no blocking. I cannot find any table scans,
(other than - - 120 row temp table scans) nor does the Index Tuning Wizrd
recommend that I add anything. No software other than SQL Server and some
CommVault backup software are on the box. But still, performance is all over
the place. Sometimes everything is humming right along between 3 and 5
seconds, but later on it will be between 40 and 50 seconds. Of course I see
all of these Procs in Profiler, but everything appears to be OK with them.
Ive been on this all day and am really at a loss as to what to do from here.
Any ideas?
--
TIA,
ChrisRThat is not much to go on. What is it you are doing? 3 to 5 seconds isn't
humming along in my book but it is hard to say without seeing what you are
trying to do. No that it should make that much of a difference but maybe
you are getting a lot of recompiles due to the temp table populations. Have
you tried replacing them with table vars? They sound like the optimal size
for table vars over temp tables.

When you say the procs, as they appear in Profiler, appear ok, what do
you mean? If they are in fact appearing within your expected performance
parameters, you should see CPU, Reads, and Duration figures that are
normal. Duration should be in the 3,000 - 5,000ms range as you mentioned
and in all likelyhood, performance at the client should be good as well.
If OTOH you are seeing a Duration of 30,000ms or elevated CPU or Read
activity, then I'm guessing that Profiler is showing you there is a
problem.
Can you be more specific about any differences in the Profiler output
between good and bad performance.
