Books Online Updated

Hi,
While installing the SQL Server 2000 Eval, I skipped Books Online since I
had previously downloaded the Books Online (Updated). I then installed the
updated version of Books Online. Now, when I try to access help from any of
the SQL Server tools like Query Analyzer, etc, nothing happens and no help
window comes up. I'd appreciate information on how to connect the SQL Server
installation to the updated Books Online.
Thanks for any help!
YogiFirst simply try re-installing the updated books on line..
If that doesn't work, go back to the SQL install, and do a custom install
and simply select ONLY install books.

Books Online July 2006 issue

The SQL Server Books Online was working installed on my workstation fine until this morning. Now when I open it up it does not show me T-SQL reference with all the commands and functions. Yesterday I was on the MSDN website using the Books Online. Could some pointers in the program been corrupted? I have uninstalled and reinstalled Books Online to no avail.

Please help.

Thanks,

Fred

Hi Fred,

When you open Books Online on your local machine, do you see a Contents tab (typically located on the left-hand side of the page)? If no, click the Contents option on the top tool bar. This should reopen the Contents tab that has been closed or hidden.

2. If that doesn't resolve your problem, can you please provide more information. For example, can you find T-SQL Reference topics by using the Index or Search tabs?

Regards,

Gail

Hi Gail,

Yes, the Contents tab is there. When I expand "SQL Server 2005 Books Online" entry in the Contents tab and then expand "SQL Server Language Reference" it shows only "Transact-SQL Reference". It used to show more. Then when I expand "Transact-SQL Reference" it only shows "System Tables (Transact-SQL)". It used to list all the statements and functions.

Thanks,

Fred

Hi Fred,

Okay, this sounds like maybe a filter was accidently set that is limiting the returned topics. At the top of the Contents tab, there's a "Filtered By" drop down box. Make sure the filter is set to either 'unfiltered' or 'SQL Server 2005', or 'SQL Server Database Engine'.

That should resolve the problem, but if it doesn't let me know.

Hi Gail,

Thanks, that fixed the problem.

Books Online Help..

I have installed SQL Server 2000 Personal edition on my desktop, which has a C: and a D: drive. All the program files, WINNT folder are on D: drive and the SQL Server has also been installed on the D: Drive.
Now when I try to open the Books online then I get the error " unable to open D:\Program files\Microsoft SQL Server\~sql80.col.

Did you check to see whether sql80.col exists on your D drive?

Do you get this error when you invoke the help system through both the Windows Menu bar and Query Analyzer's help menu?

Can you run the following command:

clients connected to that server.

Doesn't it work?
1) Copy Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Books directory
2) Execute C:\WINDOWS\hh.exe

BOL May 2007 shows no index and no table of contents

I downloaded and installed SqlServer2K5_BOL_May2007.msi, and it had no index and no table of contents. The shortcut is
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Help 8\dexplore.exe" /helpcol ms-help://MS.SQLCC.v9 /usehelpsettings SQLServerBooksOnline.9.0 /LaunchFKeywordTopic sql9.portal.f1

there are table of contents files:

Directory of C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Books\1033

01/26/2007 11:59 AM 12,949 sql90.hxt
07/27/2006 07:53 AM 271 SQLCC.hxt
11/07/2006 02:16 PM 687 ssm3.hxt

and there are index files too -- the most important one seeming to be :

05/23/2007 12:44 PM 13,630,606 sql90.hxq

I re-executed the .msi and chose repair.
That didn't work to show the index or TC either.

I will try a reboot -- but then I'll have to resintall the previous BOL.

I downloaded and installed it, I was asked about a previous version and choose yes to override it. I am also running Katamai BOL both runs fine. I have no problems, so I think you should delete the download and get a new file for the next install. Hope this helps.|||TOC and index have showed up after a reboot. (Windows XP SP2)

Jason and Ekrem are correct. Right now the downloaded Katmai BOL is the same
as the installed version of Books Online. However, once Katmai is released,
we will continue to release updates to the Katmai Books Online and t that
point, the installed version and the downloaded version will be different.
We started doing this with SQL Server 2000 and with SQL Server 2005, we've
made 5 "refreshed" versions of Books Online available for download.
Hope that helps,

Blocked sleeping active connections

Hi

We just installed SQL service pack 4. I am now finding that when doing a sp_who2 active, there are a lot of connections that are blocked by itself. The common factor is they all have a status of 'sleeping'. The strange thing is that even though it shows the connection is blocked, it is in fact not and will still return results. Below is a snapshot of a portion of what the sp_who2 active returns:

SPID Status Login HostName BlkBy DBName
53 sleeping sa TRACKER 53 dbABC
58 sleeping sa TRACKER 58 dbCDE
64 sleeping sa TRACKER 64 dbSTA
66 RUNNABLE User12 PC24 . master
70 sleeping User5 ANALYSIS 70 dbBML
74 sleeping sa TRACKER 74 dbCDE
76 sleeping sa TRACKER 76 dbPTS
83 sleeping User5 ANALYSIS 83 dbANA
86 DORMANT User11 CPTDB . NULL

Has anyone seen this? Is it related to the installation of service pack 4? (We have installed the services pack on many other SQL servers, but have not come accross this before.

Tx,
TessZAThe "self-blocking spid" is a new feature of SP4. In short, it is not actual blocking. If a spid is waiting on a latch, it shows as blocking itself. I have not seen it on this scale, though. Do you happen to know if you are suffering a lot of disk activity around the times that a lot of self-blocking spids are showing up?

Blank warning when I launch SQL Express mgt.

I have rebuilt this laptop (XPpro) and installed the SQL Express, now when we
launch the sql server management studio express we get a blank warning popup.
Anyone have any ideas why we are getting this and how to remove it?
I have sql loaded on other laptops and this is the first one that this has
showed up on. When you click on OK you can connect to your dBase just fine.
Thanks.

I was having the same problem. To fix it, I did a complete uninstall of all sql components via add/remove. Then manually removed the C:\Program Files\Micorsoft SQL Server folder.
Then I removed the Network 2.0 framework then, after restarting I reinstalled everything and the blank dialog is gone. You might try just reinstalling the Network 2.0 Framework first. I think MSMXL 6.0 gets removed automatically, but that has to go also.
In any case, I had tried numerous other fixes and this is the only thing that worked.

BIP Portal

Hi everyone,

I've just installed the BIP portal on an Application Server running Windows 2000 with the latest Service Pack and I choose to install the BIP database on a database Server. I've put my user in the BIP_ADMIN on the Application server's local windows user-group and also in the BIP_USERS role on the database BIP. If I try to browse the URL on the the application server it works well, but when I try to browse from my local machine thorough the network I get the following message: User 'AGFBRASIL\GAVieira' do not currently have access to the database. Please add the user to 'BIP_USERS' user group on SQL server's machine or contact the system administrator.

Anyone could help me?

Thanks in advance,

Genilson from So Paulo, Brazil.Hi Paulo
Try to connect to the database from your local computer without BIP.
Thanks,
Igor

Ok, I've already tried and it worked well. I think the problem is with BIP application.

Thanks,

Genilson|||Then ensure the defined user 'AGFBRASIL\GAVieira' has required privilege on SQL side to connect to the database.|||Hello Satya,

Yes. This user is owner of the database.|||May try the BIP site for any information for this behaviour.|||Hello gavieira

I've got the same problem and
thread http://www.dbforums.com/t803897.html
( after translation from German ;)
helped me to solve it partially

I've created login BIPuser on SQL Server with PUBLIC access to
BIP database (it turned out that BIP_USER role membership isn't neccessery in my case)
and modified web.config in BIP directory on IIS

<add key="Authentication" value="SQL" />
<add key="UserID" value="BIPuser" />
<add key="Password" value="password" />

The problem IMHO concerns failed delagation for user logged into application server through IIS to SQl on another server - it tries to connect as nt anonymous

I'll also be greatfull if gurues suggest more appropriate solution|||If you're using nT authentication then ensure IIS is configured to use the same, if not ensure login used has necessary privilege to access SQL from IIS>
