Jason and Ekrem are correct. Right now the downloaded Katmai BOL is the same
as the installed version of Books Online. However, once Katmai is released,
we will continue to release updates to the Katmai Books Online and t that
point, the installed version and the downloaded version will be different.
We started doing this with SQL Server 2000 and with SQL Server 2005, we've
made 5 "refreshed" versions of Books Online available for download.
Hope that helps,

|||There are actually three versions of Books Online downloads currently
available on the Web. We periodically publish updates to the Books Online
for the currently shipping version of SQL Server, and make the updates
available as a Web download. In addition, we now publish the SQL Server 2005
Books Online updates through Microsoft Update. As you have found, we have
also publish the SQL Server 2008 Books Online for the latest CTP so that
customers can download the documentation seperately from the product.
The current Books Online downloads are:
1. SQL Server 2008 November CTP Books Online.
2. SQL Server 2005 July 2007 Books Online update, which can also be
installed by using Microsoft Update. We are in the process of finalizing the
testing to refresh the download and Microsoft Updat with the September 2007
update.
3. SQL Server 2000 January 2004 Books Online. This was the last update we
made for the SQL Server 2000 Books Online.
