Books, articles on printing reports

I am a developer. I current have the Developer Edition of SQL Server 2000 on
my desktop and I am installing VB.Net 2003 and Reporting Services so that a
report, that uses data from a SQL Server 2000 database, can be printed.
I seek the minimal education available that will enable me to design this
report that my customers, who using the database, will print. Are there
suggestions for books or articles that meet this need?
Thanks.
JimMicrosoft SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services is pretty straight forward if
you avoid the filler about how the engine works (actually to be fair all the
books I've seen spend a lot of time on this), there is a better book but its
quite a bit more techy - hitch hikers guide to reporting services.

released a PDF version a few weeks ago, PDF version is about $20. I found
it a lot easier to read than the others.

Books on SSAS 2005....

Hi,

I will be very happy if anyone can suggest me a very good book (preferably microsoft press book) on SQL Server Analysis Services 2005 (SSAS 2005). I mean hard copy. I want to know the in and out of SSAS 2005......so i will be thankful if im suggested some good book on it.

Expecting your reply soon!!!!!

TIA,

Shaun Michael

Hi Shaun,

I'm currently reading the following books and I think they are pretty good.

- Applied Microsoft Analysis Services 2005

- Delivering Business Intelligence with Microsoft SQL Server 2005

Those books cover the whole Microsoft BI Platform (SQL,SSAS,SSIS and RS) and not only SSAS.

HTH,

Eric

Also has accompanying website www.sqlreportingservices.net, where you can see (I think!) the first two chapters of the book, to get a flavour for it.

Looking for suggestions on some good books for Reporting Services that will
get me up to speed on its functionality. A book with a good index, good for
beginners, good reference book; that will hopefully get me up to speed pretty
quickly on utilizing Reporting Services.
Thanks in advance for your help.
wnfisbawnfisba,
I bought Wrox's Prof SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services book a month ago,
and I was disappointed.
I was very disappointed when I tried to learn about the ReportViewer
control. There were only a few pages that dealt with it, and it really didn't
get into the good, stuff.
I wanted to use the control on remote servers, and it didn't explain the
issues on setting the credentials.
I would have re-titled this book - - Beginner SQL Server Report Server, for
it really only touches high level topics regarding the SSRS 2005. However, if
you want a lesson in developing WinForm application, this is your book.

Bookmark in Code not working.

I have a report in reporting services that has a bookmark value asigned to each row. In the following Page_Load event for the page, I'm getting the following error on the ReportViewer1.JumpToBookmark("6") statement:

"An exception of type 'System.InvalidOperationException' occurred in Microsoft.ReportViewer.WebForms.dll but was not handled in user code

Additional information: Some parameters or credentials have not been specified"

Protected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load

If Not IsPostBack Then

Dim strReport1 As String = "/ReportDirectory/CurrentWeekSales"

ReportViewer1.ServerReport.ReportServerUrl = New System.Uri(CStr(Session.Item("ReportServer")))
ReportViewer1.ServerReport.ReportPath = strReport1
ReportViewer1.ServerReport.Timeout = 500000

Do While ReportViewer1.ServerReport.IsDrillthroughReport
ReportViewer1.PerformBack()
Loop

Dim RptParameters1 As ReportParameter() = New ReportParameter(0) {}
RptParameters1(0) = New ReportParameter("EBO_EmpKey", CStr(Session.Item("UserKey")))
ReportViewer1.ServerReport.SetParameters(RptParameters1)

ReportViewer1.ServerReport.Refresh()

ReportViewer1.JumpToBookmark("6")

End If
End Sub

What am I missing?

ThanksI too am having a similar problem. I find that JumpToBookmark() simply does not work no matter what I try. Interestingly, setting the 'action' property of a TextBox within the report to jump to the target bookmark seems to work. Unfortunately, I need to be able to do this in code without having to force the user to click on the report.

Is this a known problem, or is there something else on the viewer and/or report that needs to be set?

Thanks,

Ian.

Book Suggestions

I would like to know if anyone has a suggestion of a book for biginners.
Reporting Services seems to be a very difficult thing to get informaion on.
The only thing that has been remotly helpful has been information from people
more expreianced. I would like book for reference. I ordered the book
"Hitchhiker's Guide to SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services". Is this one
going to be helpful or should I find another one too?The "Hitchhiker's Guide to SQL Server 200 Reporting Services" is an
excellent book.
You may also want to buy "SQL Server Reporting Services" by Wrox. Another
excellent book.
These 2 books would make a excellent edition to your book reference library.

I would also recommend the Hitchhiker's Guide.
If, as you say, you are green then the Microsoft Step by Step book

Hitchhiker's Guide will give you depth. Another good RS2000 book is
Teo Lachev's book from Manning.
The Wrox RS2000 book is good too.

Book recommendations for an all encompassing SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services

Book recommendation

Hi,
I am not sure which book to buy: Hitchhiker's Guide to SQL Server 2000
Reporting Services
or
Professional SQL Server Reporting Services -- by Paul Turley
I need a book that will also show me for example how to pass parameters from
asp.net to rss. I want the user to select parameters from asp.net and pass
those parameters to the stored procedure in the report.
ThanksI use the Wrox book (as you mentioned) and also SQL Reporting Services Step
by Step - by Microsoft. Both deal, in depth, with design, deployment and
server administration.
Depending on how you want the report to open from your aspx page, you can
simply use the URL for the RS report, and pass the parameters in that (that's
how RS does it), to open the report only, without any fuss. I also use
buttons on my ASP pages to render the report in PDF/Excel etc immediately
without having the user required to 'export' it themselves.

Book question: Professional SQL Server Reporting Services

I am fairly new to SQL Server and very new to Reporting Services. I am
working my way through the WROX book: Professional SQL Server Reporting
Services by Turley et. al. Is this the best forum to ask questions about the
book in general and issues with walk-through examples? If it is, I am having
problems with the example that concludes on page 112. This involves
cascading parameters.
Everything works on the dataset definitions. If I run the Stores_BY_City
dataset and select AZ/Phoenix I do indeed see the 3 stores in Phoenix (437,
473, and 475). When I preview the report the parameter drop down lists work
as expected. However, the reporting fields in the preview are blank. The
labels show fine. Any suggestion on how to debug? Thank you, BobBob
Please send me you RDL file so I can see what's going on.

Sorry for digressing slightly. Kirk is no longer on the SSIS team (unfortunately). He's moved to OBA.

Yeh, the code works against RTM. :-)

BTW, when discussing books, don't forget "The Microsoft Data Warehouse Toolkit" by Joy Mundy, Warren Thornthwaite, Ralph Kimball." It covers SSIS very effectively in the context of solving business and data warehouse problems.

bmp BLOP fields

Hi,
Does Sql reporting services support Bmp BLOB files?
SapnilSapnil, I believe the answer is yes.
You'll need an image control and choose 'Database' as the 'Source' and
the appropriate column name as the 'Value'. Also select the appropriate
MIME type.

bitmaps stored in the database as BLOB fields?
If you mean external files then again yes it can, either using a field
containing the url/unc path or some other direct path are expression to
the path.

I've just checked the Sample Report, Product Catalogue. This uses this
feature and works. It shows an image for each stock item and the image
is taken directly from the database. I suspect you've a setting wrong.
I suggest you load and take a look at this sample report. Look up
sample reports in BOL for details.
In the sample the image is inside a rectangle, which may confuse you
when trying to select it. In the properties pane, in the drop-down list
of property names select ProdPhoto.

I have tried the sample product catalog sample report and it works for me too.
But If I am not wrong the images stored in the BLOB fieds are of type GIF
I tried the same thing with the Northwind database, trying to display the
employees on the report, but there seems to be some problem.

I've never actually used Blob fields. So I'm going by the book rather
than experience! Have you tried all the different MIME types against
your data? Are you 100% sure your fields contain bitmaps and not gifs
or jpegs? I guess you are because you've had it working in Crystal, but
it's worth a check!

And you are right, its working with crystal reports.
Actually I am in the process of evaluating repoting tools.

I'm a bit stumped I'm afraid. What exactly are you getting?
In terms of evaluation, I'm an ex-Crystal user who switched to RS last
February and have had little need to revert back since.
That's not to say that there are things Crystal doesn't do better than
RS, but for my environment, RS has many more advantages. I'm playing
with RS2005 now (due to be "launched" early November) and it's looking
good with ReportBuilder filling many of the RS's shortcomings against
Crystal. This is a bit off topic now but if you trawl this newsgroup
you'll see plenty of worthwhile exchanges on the pro's and con's of
various reporting tools.
Obviously this image issue is a problem for you! Are you using SP1 or
SP2?

Maybe you could look at the code around the image control in the sample
report and that on your report for some clues.

I checked the RDL for the reports and there is no difference
Pretty strange

It may be worth raising a support incident with Microsoft if you have
an MSDN subscription. It would be a shame for you to decide not to use
RS because of this one glitch. In an enterpirise environment RS is far
better than Crystal, in my view, not to mention a whole lot cheaper if
you already use MS SQL Server.

Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) when printing

We have been using SQL 2005 reporting services for a while but recently when
some one tries to print a report they will get a BSOD and the machine reboots.
Any Ideas'?We are also having the same problem when printing, blue screen with error
message 0X80070709.

It sounds kind of like a printer driver issue. Does this occur when
exporting to any SSRS supported format (Excel, PDF, CSV, Web Archive,
etc) and then printing?
Enrique Martinez
Sr. Software Consultant|||No, It does not happen when you export the report.
But, We have been able to narrow it down to PCL6 print drivers.

Class that is causing the problem. It seems to be happening after a recent
Windows Update, but I have not attributed it to any particular one. Go to
C:\windows\downloaded program files and delete the RSClientPrint Class and
run your report again. It should prompt you to download the control again
and printing should resume after that.
Wish I could flag this so MS could figure out why it is happening. It has
happened to two of my users and I am sure there will be more to follow.

change your print drivers to PCL 5e it won't crash any longer.
ana9 had the answer, but the reason is still not figured out.

your printers regardless of manufacturer?

realeased. I understand a hot patch may be available as early as Monday.
