Boolean Report Parameters

Hi, I have created a report parameter using a Boolean data type.

When I preview my Report I can select either True or False for this parameter. Is there any way of changing the 'True' label to say something else and again the same with the 'False' label?

Click on Report-Parameters

Select your parameter and go down to Available Values

Type in a label and the value

ex.

Open - True

Closed - False

I ran into the same issue today when I tried to change "String" parameter to "Boolean", and hoping to have radiobox instead of listbox dropdown.

No good, it'd be boolean type with dropdown, which is the same as "String" type essentially

It'd be nice to able to change label for "True" and "False"

Boolean report parameter with Yes/No choice list

SSRS 2005
In the Report Designer you can specify a Boolean report parameter with a
list of values. When the report is viewed on the Preview tab, the dropdown
list is rendered for the parameter instead of the usual True/False radio
buttons.
However, when the report is run on the Report Server, the same report
parameter is rendered with the usual True/False radio buttons and the defined
list is ignored.
Is this a bug in Report Designer, Report Server or both? Are there plans to
fix one of these so at least the behavior is consistent?

workaround:
Use a string parameter with a Valid Values list instead.

Boolean parameters

Hello,
I'm creating a boolean parameter in Report Designer and set {Label = "Yes",
Value = True} and {Label = "No", Value = False}. Then on Preview Page I see
to radio buttons, the first one is labeled "true" and the other one is
"false". Is this a bug? Can I set the labels I want to this radio buttons?This is a known limitation and scheduled to be addressed in a future
release.

Boolean parameter default issue on report server

Hi Folks,
I have a report with a boolean parameter(Show Reversed Invoices). I default
it to 'No' and this works in the BIDS environment just as i want with a drop
down menu, when deployed to the reportserver it renders as True/False radio
buttons however, the False radio button is not automatically checked. What am
I missing in order to have this happen?

When you say you set the default to 'No', do you mean 'False'? If not,
you will want to change the default value to False. If so, you may
want to check the Service Pack level of SQL Server on the Report
Server, it may not be the latest and you may need to get the latest
service pack for your version of SQL Server (if SQL 2005, SP2). Hope
this helps.

Sr. Software Consultant|||It doesn't seem to be a Service Pack problem. I encountered the same exact
problem on SQL 2000 SP4. Oddly enough, my report had two boolean parameters,
the first of which defaulted correctly on the published Reporting Services
site, and the second did not (however, both worked fine in the Visual Studio
developer environment).
I was able to workaround the problem by renaming the parameter. At that
point, everything started working fine.

I have a Summary report and a Detail (drillthrough) report.

the summary report displays.

Summary report

Code Snippet

Adult | Male | Count

Yes | Yes | 50

When the user clicks on the hightlighted count it links to the Details report displaying each of the records referenced.

The detail report uses 2 boolean parameters Adult & Male, this works perfectly for the first 4 lines displayed, however if the user clicks on the total value to display all the records, i'm unable to provide the NULL value.

Any ideas?

you may not get answers if you are not more specific.

How is the total item generated. Why use a NULL value instead of something like "ALL" or "%" when the user select the total.

This may be easier to catch in the sub or linked report, the sub report will easilly interpret LIKE '%' rather than some NULL value.

Please provide some more details.

The report queries against a database field that is a boolean but can accept a NULL value.

So i configured the recieving report to accept a boolean value "True, False & also Null".

If i used LIKE as the where criteria it obviously wouldn't be as efficent.

What about using a dropdown param (whether multi select or not, depending on your needs) rather than a boolean here? Provide a tinyint to your procedure, if you're using a procedure to receive the parameter values, in which one value (say, 2) represents null. Interpret the results of what you get as this parameter to build up your query -- you could interpret it as an IN() rather than as a LIKE, or as ORs if you prefer (although the ORs are probably going to be interpreted internally just like the IN).

One really good way to do this is to use ISNULL(TheField,2) in your WHERE condition...

The point is, the default parameter representation for booleans with those radio buttons (with or without null checkbox) is hokey to start with, why not just use a dropdown with labels you like to represent them and integer values underneath.

In this case, I honestly think the rant would be misdirected. As I have said several times in posts on this forum (because it is NOT a rant <s>), the default parameter representation is just that: a default. You can hide this panel, present your own parameter interface, and pass params to the report. I think this is always what was intended. The default just had to be generic enough to work without any sort of business logic connection and was never expected to be "the interface that you presented in your polished application".

Boolean logic on binary data

I have a 21-byte binary field in a SQL Server table with which I want to do boolean AND logic in a report. (Basically, I want to test whether or not individual bits are turned on.) How can I do this? Is it possible to deal with the binary data without first converting it to a string?

MarkYou can analyze your bitmap values using RDL expressions which are regular VB.NET.|||How exactly do I refer to the data, however? What I mean is, I need to access the bits of this big blob of binary data, but SSRS is not binary-friendly--it wants a string or an int.

All I want to do is access 1 particular bit of this binary blob. If I have to convert this to a string somewhere I will, but I'd prefer not to if at all possible.

(FYI, the report needs to analyze the logonHours attribute for an Active Directory user. This is stored as a byte array, with each bit representing 1 hour in a given week--it's 1 if the user can logon, or 0 if he cannot. I'm converting this to be a 21-byte binary field in SQL.)sql

Boolean formatting in report

I have a data source with a column that is a boolean data type. When
I render this data on the report the value of 0 displays as "False"
and 1 displays as "True". I would like 0 to display as "No" and 1 to
display as "Yes". I am assuming I have to set up an IIF statement
that evaluates the value and changes the display based on that. I was
wondering if anyone knew of a better way, such as a Custom Format
value that would be a better route?

The way you mentioned is quick and the effort is negligible.
=iif(Fields!SomeField.Value = True, "Yes", "No") -or- =iif(Fields!
SomeField.Value = 1, "Yes", "No")
You could also try using a case statement in the query/stored
procedure that is sourcing the report.
select case when SomeField = 'True' then 'Yes' else 'No' end as
SomeField, ... from table_x ...

books online tutorial - why am i getting an error?

I am doing the MSDN Online tutorial "Accessing the Report Server Web Service
Using Visual Basic or Visual C#".
However, when I come to the 3rd step, Accessing the Web Service, and use the
supplied code, I get an error saying
"Namespace or type specified in the Imports
'GetPropertiesSample.ReportService2005' doesn't contain any public member or
cannot be found. Make sure the namespace or the type is defined and contains
at least one public member. Make sure the imported element name doesn't use
any aliases."
and
"Type 'ReportingService2005' is not defined."
This happens when using C# or VB.
What I am doing wrong?

Bookmarks in HTMLFragment

I have a lengthly report that by business design uses the report webservice
and HTMLFragment mode. Using the report toolbar is not an option.
I would like to have a "bookmark toc" near the top of the report to jump to
bookmarks lower in the document. However, like others have found, the
bookmark functionality is not supported in HTMLFragment mode.
Is there any way to get bookmark functionality to work in HTMLFragment mode?
As a workaround, I believe I cound insert my own bookmarks in the HTML
stream returned from the Render call using regular expressions, but I would
really hate to go to all that trouble if there was a better way.

Bookmarks and browser "Back" button behavior.

I am using a lot of "BookmarkIds" and "Jump To Bookmarks" in a certain
report to Navigate around. There is a menu at the top of the report
that allows you to hyperlink down to more detail below. Problem is
this: When I hyperlink from the menu (at the top of the report) down to
more detail, I expect to be able to hit the Back button in my browser,
and return to the original spot in the report. Well, nothing happens
when I hit the browsers Back button. However, if I Export this report
to an MHTML file, the MTHML file works as desired (although it seems to
redisplay the report rather than go to previous link). One more
thing... I am pretty sure this WAS working at one time. Has anyone else
had similar trouble?I have more info on this problem. After exporting to an MHTML file, the
browser Back button works for the first few times I use it, then it
simply stops working until I exit the report and come back in. It is
not grayed out, it just stops going back to the top of the report when
pressed.

Bookmarks

Hi,
How I can create an index in a report which are referencing bookmarks in the
report?
I would like to have this format:
[Name / Title of bookmark] [Page Number]
...
[Name / Title of bookmark] [Page Number]
Can I get the page numer with an expression?
ThanksThis is something I asked for in the early days of RS2000,
it was a problem that could only be resolved by using two passes.
Generate the data, save it into a data table adding a row number to
each record. If you know how many rows fit a page you can then generate
the report then construct an index at the end using the row number.
I'm aware this is far from ideal, but I can't think of another way.
The reason it's difficult is that the different rendering methods all
have different ideas about what a page is.

But this is not an option because the report isn't based on one dataset or
table, the report format is mixed.

Thanks, but how you want to calculate the pagenumber if you havbe different
tables, freetext, charts, etc.
My questions was also about a custom render item.
Because in the SRSS2005 library you have also a class named 'Bookmark' &
'Bookmarks', where all the bookmarks are stored.
It's there no way to access these classes / properties?

I don't think you can use the bookmark directly in a report designer.
You can use the class only in your custom rendering extensions for
Reporting Services.
A rendering extension is a component or module of a report server that
transforms report data and layout information into a device-specific
format. SQL Server Reporting Services includes six rendering extensions:
HTML, Excel, CSV or Text, XML, Image, and PDF. You can create additional
rendering extensions to generate reports in other formats.
The Reporting Services Extension Library is a set of classes, interfaces,
and value types that are included in Reporting Services. This library
provides access to system functionality and is designed to be the
foundation on which Microsoft .NET Framework applications can be used to
extend Reporting Services components.
You may find the information in the Reporting Services Extensions section
in SQL Books online.

Bookmark in Code not working.

I have a report in reporting services that has a bookmark value asigned to each row. In the following Page_Load event for the page, I'm getting the following error on the ReportViewer1.JumpToBookmark("6") statement:

What am I missing?

ThanksI too am having a similar problem. I find that JumpToBookmark() simply does not work no matter what I try. Interestingly, setting the 'action' property of a TextBox within the report to jump to the target bookmark seems to work. Unfortunately, I need to be able to do this in code without having to force the user to click on the report.

Is this a known problem, or is there something else on the viewer and/or report that needs to be set?

Bookmark Functionality and HTMLFragment

I have a report displayed within a frame. A different frame in the
frameset is posting parameter values to this report display frame.
The bookmarks on the report do not work when displayed within the
frame. The onclick javascript command is not created for the
bookmarks.
I have the following HTML configuration settings:
Format = HTML4.0
Toolbar = False
Parameters = False
HTMLFragment = True
If I set the HTMLFragment = false, the bookmarks work, but my
subreports are not rendered in IE (but the subreports are rendered in
Firefox), instead I get the typical red X indicative of a missing
image.
When I view the report via Report Manager, the bookmarks work
correctly. When I include the toolbar on the report, the bookmarks
work correctly (and I see the bookmark onclick code generated when I
view the source of the report).
Any help appreciated.The bookmarks will not work in fragment mode as the content is expected to
be inserted in another document. You shouldn't need fragment mode for the
frame. As for why the subreports are not showing, I don't understand why
(especially if you say it works in Firefox). Do you mean images? Subreports
are never replaced with a red X.

Bookmark and back button behavior in Report Manager/IE.

Can anyone verify the expected behavior of the browser back button for
me please? Using Report Manager, I have a one-page report with several
bookmarks. When I jump from a link to one of my bookmarks, is the
"back" button in the browser supposed to take me back to the
originating link? It does nothing. (Using Reporting Services SP1 (Dev)
and IE 6.0 SP2 all on XP os).
Then when I export this to Web Archive (mhtml) format, the back button
works fine for while, then randomly stops working after hitting an
unpredictable number of links within this one-page report. However,
using Netscape 7.0, the exported Web Archive file works beautifully.

Hi Eric,
i got the same behaviour. After an unpredictable number of jumps from report
to bookmarks and back the browser opens sometimes blank report page or does
nothing.

Yes that works for me, but:
If i got some hyperlinks in my report and jump to a linked report, the
Back-Button work for while and after
some clicks...the back button stop working

rc:toolbar=false. Any ideas anyone? Do I need to re-install
something to get the back button and bookmarks to work with the toolbar

I uninstalled and re-installed everything (vs.net and RS 2000) to no
avail.
I installed SP2. Same back-button problems.
So, I opened an incident with Microsoft and they were able to reproduce
the same behavior listed here.
I was told that an official bug report was issued. I am awaiting the
final word.
Eric|||Unfortunately, this bookmark problem has been determined (by Microsoft)
to be a bug. It was present in SP1 (at least for me) and is also still
present in SP2. I wonder if it existed in the original release of RS
2000? It seems to me like a fairly large oversight, and I am a little
surprised no one found it earlier. Guess I'll have to try another
method. I really like the bookmarks since they are so easy to setup and
use. If only the browser back button worked when using the html viewer
and bookmarks, I would be a happy camper.

workaround I discovered is this....
Go directly to the report using a URL with rc:javascript=false. And
rc:toolbar=false works too, if you don't need the toolbar.
Does anyone know if there is a way to turn off javascript within the
report design so I can use report manager to access the report also?

viewing?No. I thought it should be possible and investigated this awhile back and
found out that you could not do this.
