Can You advise me some books about merge replication, with alternate sync
partner and maybe republishing.
Plus lots of T-Sql scripts with comment

I'm not sure what "same database" means. Is it referring to the same server
database? Let's say I have a sales force where SQL Compact 3.5 installed on
each agent's laptop. Does it mean only one sales agent at a time can merge
with the corporate server? Please tell me this is not true. We need to have
multiple agents replicating simultaneously.

Hello Tom,
I understand that you are confused by the descriptioin "You cannot start
two merge replication processes at the same time on the same database." in
BOL. You'd like to know only one sales agent at a time can merge with the
corporate server if you use merge replication.
I believe it's not true. You could have multiple agents replicate
simultaneously though there is only process running for the specific
database you'd like to replciate.

blue return arrow icon on Replication monitor - significance?

Good morning,
This morning I opened up enterprise manager (sql Server 2000) and noticed a
blue return arrow looking icon on the Replication Monitor folder. When I
opened up Replication monitor I observed the same blue return arrow looking
icon on the publishers and agents folders. What is the significance of this
icon? How do I remove it?
When I get a red X icon I just restart the distribution agent and refresh
everythihg and the red x goes away. What do I need to do for this blue arrow
icon?

action (11/28/06) says No Replicated Transactions are available. Is there a
site anywhere that explains what the various alert icons signify? This way I
can use the standardized lingo to describe what I am seeing.
It is still a little bit early over my way, and customers haven't been
calling about any problems (yet). Do I need to do anything or will this
resolve itself? We have, been having some connectivity problems in recent
times. But usually, I get a big red x when that happens. I restart the
Distribution Agent and it goes away.

We are having a performance issue on one of our busy sql server 2000 (build
818) machines. There is tran.repl. Publisher db and subscriber dbs are on the
same box.
We have seen this problem after we moved sql server to a new box. SW and HW
configuration are the same.
There are two head blockers.
Waittype is PAGELATCH_SH
Inputbuffer is sp_MSget_repl_commands
CPU is %100 and LogReader is always running for hours until we stop it.
Any idea?

The log reader was unresponsive/hung. Resetting up repl cleared the problem.
I wonder if it might be a sql bug?

Don't think I ever have tried it with publisher and subscriber on the
same machine. This is one-way, right? If it's two-way, and you
forget to turn on the bit, things would get ugly, might be something

We are having a performance issue on one of our busy sql server 2000 (build
818) machines. There is tran.repl. Publisher db and subscriber dbs are on th

same box.
We have seen this problem after we moved sql server to a new box. SW and HW

Er, ... what does sp_who2 show as the head of the blocking chain?
Don't think I ever have tried it with publisher and subscriber on the
same machine. This is one-way, right? If it's two-way, and you
forget to turn on the bit, things would get ugly, might be something
like this.

Blocking caused by Replication

Hi All,
I wonder how I can pursue a blocking problem caused by SQL Replication.
We are having a performance issue on one of our busy sql server 2000 (build
818) machines. There is tran.repl. Publisher db and subscriber dbs are on the
same box.
We have seen this problem after we moved sql server to a new box. SW and HW
configuration are the same.
There are two head blockers.
Waittype is PAGELATCH_SH
Inputbuffer is sp_MSget_repl_commands
CPU is %100 and LogReader is always running for hours until we stop it.
Any idea?

The log reader was unresponsive/hung. Resetting up repl cleared the problem.
I wonder if it might be a sql bug'

BLOB Merge Replication

Hi,

I have setup a Merge Replication between a SQL Server 2005 and a SQL Server Mobile using native C++ code in Windows CE 5. Replication of normal data types (nvarchar, ints etc) works great, but when I try to replicate a blob about 1.5 MB the performance is awful. The download phase seems to be quick while the applytime (printed in debugger) when the database on my CE device is updated is about 3 minutes for 1.5MB binary data which is unacceptable since the database gets locked up during the applytime. The BLOB column is defined as image data type which shall hold up to 1GB data. I have tried to disable compression during replication, but it doesnt matter. Does anyone have some experience of using merge replication with blobs in SQL Server Mobile?

My Idea was to use merge replication as a way to transfer CAB-files for installation on the Windows CE 5 device by storing them as BLOB:s, but the bad performance may make it impossible.

Ideas? Anyone?

About the only thing you can do is to factor out the BLOB itself into a related table. For example, let's say right now you have a table called "Orders" which has 10 columns, one of which is a customer signature (image column in SQL Mobile). Every time any column in the orders table is updated, the whole row is replicated, including the image. It would be more efficient to have an Orders table and a separate OrderSignatures table, related by a foreign key.

I must say that I'm dissapointed in the performance. I mean 1.5 MB binary data is not alot in these days and it is almost impossible to handle for SQL Server Mobile in a merge replication. Can I expect the same bad performance when I replicate alot of rows (lets say 3000) with more ordinary data (say a few columns with ints and varchar(50)) or is this performance problem only related to dealing with BLOBs?

I was thinking about your post some more and it occurs to me that you are trying to solve the problem of automatically downloading CAB files

from the server to the CE5 device. I also frequently have this requirement when a mobile app must be automatically updating. There are some
